The God Shard
I loved the concept of the Ruins of the Dying World Jam — so much, in fact, that I used it to motivate me to finally get some more work done on Alight.
"The God Shard" is a short adventure I put together and ran using Numenera, years ago. It was inspired by a tiny bit of information mentioned in passing in the intro adventure in the original Numenera core rules: You are sent to a "floating platform" (I think it was called) to loot its treasure for a mysterious patron, but there was no detail given about the "platform" itself, which was the most interesting part to me. I prepped an entire adventure around that concept, and decided to revisit it years later as a sample scenario for Alight.
I find it extremely difficult to write adventures: My prep for games skews very much toward "as little as humanly possible." There are still some things I want to tweak and clarify in this one, but I'm hoping clearing the hurdle of a first draft will propel me to finish much more of the game in the next few weeks. In case anyone's interested in running "The God Shard," though, I should give a heads up about a few points that aren't made explicit in this text:
The number of rooms and creatures on the Shard is left deliberately vague. Tailor to your needs for however long you want to play. I expect to run the "Inside the Shard" part in a single session, running through the list of encounters, and flying by the seat of my pants if and when all hell breaks loose.
The layout of the Shard is also deliberately vague. I started drawing a map, and I may return to that later — but for now, I think ambiguity suits it better. Heck, call it a megadungeon and fill it with stuff from your favorite bestiary, if you want.
The rules are never explained in these pages, but are not deliberately vague; they're just explained in another part of the book. In brief, though, the stat blocks for creatures show their strength (♡), armor (🛡️), and attack die (⚔). If you plan to run it with Cypher System, consider that first value, "strength," as level, and attack die as indicative of light (d6) or medium (d8) weapons. If you plan to run it with Into the Odd or Electric Bastionland, think of it as their hit points, and their actual Strength score as 10. And if you plan to run it with a D&Dish or OSR system, I need some more time to explain how to convert those first two numbers, but I bet I'll be making liberal use of the conversion guide for Cairn.
(And if you plan to run it with Alight rules, I need some more time to actually write them down, but they'll probably look something like what I'm kicking around on Twitter.)
Thanks to everybody who has encouraged me to keep plugging away on this game. I am really looking forward to finishing it and sharing it.
